Panoramic visit of the city, including the Alfama, where one of Lisbon's Jewish communities resided prior to its expulsion in the 1490s, the Rossio Square (site of the public executions conducted by the Inquisition), and the Baixa district, where the Eiffel Elevator is located). Transfer to the hotel. Walk to Beit Israel, Lisbon's new Masorti Kehilla. Spend some time in the afternoon and evening for meeting and studying together with members of Beit Israel. Day 3 (Tuesday, 23 December 2008) - LISBON - TOMAR - CASTELO de VIDE - ABRANTES
Breakfast at hotel. Departure for Tomar, site of an important Jewish community. Visit Tomar including its old synagogue and the museum. Tomar's synagogue was ordered to be built by Prince Henry the Navigator in the mid-15th century. The town also has an impressive Templar Castle, testimony of this ill-fated religious order's power in Portugal. Continuation to Castelo de Vide and visit its old Judiaria or Jewish quarter, including the restored synagogue and museum. Castelo de Vide is one of the towns in the mountain areas of Portugal associated with the Crypto-Jewish communities. These communities maintained their Jewish religious practices in hiding for centuries. While only a few dozen Crypto-Jews remain in Portugal, as many have migrated to Brazil and returned to Judaism, the town is a reminder of five centuries of spiritual survival. Transfer to Abrantes. Vegetarian dinner and departure for Madrid on overnight train.

Day 5 (Thursday, 25 December 2008) - MADRID - TOLEDO - MADRID

Toledo's Jewish community was the leading Jewish community during the Visigoth period (6th and 7th centuries) and reached its zenith during the 11th and 12th centuries, when Toledo was regarded as the Jerusalem of the West, due to its influential scholarship. Toledo's School of Translators was preeminent in the recovery of ancient Greek philosophy and knowledge. Jewish scholars were instrumental in this project, as well as in the development of the Kabbala and in the study of astronomy, philosophy, etc., under the aegis of wealthy merchants and bankers. Visit to the main synagogue and the synagogue of Samuel Halevi, the Sephardic Museum and other sites of Toledo's Jewish quarter. Return to Madrid for a free evening.
