Going up into the Land

Arrive in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative (today‛s program depends on arrival time). Travel to Jerusalem through the biblical. Shehekiyanu-Welcome ceremony overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem.  Proceed to check-in at the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem. Welcome dinner and orientation at Olive and Fish Restaurant.

Wednesday, 9 November

The Old City of Jerusalem: An Ancient Jewish Legacy

Please choose one of the following two ancient Jerusalem touring options for the group: Explore the City of David using the Bible and archaeology to make Jerusalem’s stones tell the story of the city’s ancient past, including its remarkable ancient water systems, without getting wet. Then discover the archaeological story of the Western Wall and episodes from Jewish life 2,000 years ago at Robinson’s Arch and the Southern Wall excavations. Lunch on own in the Jewish Quarter. Tour of the Jewish Quarter including the Cardo, Broad Wall and Rooftops followed by free time to shop and explore on own. Discover underground Jerusalem by touring of the Western Wall Tunnels. Free evening. Dinner on own.

Thursday, 10 November

Tour of Yad Vashem Israel’s national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Historical Museum and Children‛s Memorial. Lunch on own at Yad VaShem. Discover the story of Zionism’s founding father Theodore Herzl at the multimedia Herzl Museum, followed by a meaningful visit to Mt. Herzl Cemetery to discover chapters in the history of Israel at the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Theordore Herzl and Hannah Senesch. See the world renowned Chagall Windows at Hadassah Hospital. Dinner at Eucalyptus Restaurant. Watch the Night Spectacular – Sound and light show at the Tower of David. Friday, 11 November

Geopolitical tour of Jerusalem

Opportunity to examine critical issues impacting on the city first hand, beyond what you read in the newspapers. Explore the raucous Machine Yehuda Market and take in a slice of local life as you see Jerusalemites prepare for Shabbat.  Lunch on own. Time permitting: Tour of the nearby picturesque Nachalaot neighborhoods. Free time to relax and prepare for Shabbat. Friday/Shabbat evening‛s options: Join hundreds of other Jews from around the world to greet the Sabbath at the Western Wall or attend Friday night services at a local Jerusalem synagogue. Festive Shabbat Dinner at hotel.

Saturday, 12 November

Shabbat morning services at a local Conservative/Masorati synagogue, or on own. Traditional Shabbat Lunch at the hotel. Shabbat afternoon options: Walking tour to the historic Montefiore Windmill to discover the first neighborhood built outside the walls of the Old City. AND/OR: Walking tour to First Temple period burial site at Ketef Hinnom – Where archaeologists discovered the oldest biblical text ever found. Havdalah with Rabbi Hyman. Dinner on own.

Sunday, 13 November

Set out across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod’s palace and the last outpost of Jewish independence 2,000 years ago. Discussion: Which Jewish Legacy – Masada or Yavne? Lunch at Herod’s Dead Sea resort. Swim in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, at Herod’s Dead Sea Resort. The resort also has a fresh water pool and spa facilities. Massage and spa treatments available by prior reservation at own expense. Travel north through the Jordan Valley to Tiberias. Check in to Galei Kinneret Hotel in Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Dinner on own.

Monday, 14 November

Ancient and Modern Geopolitics and Israel’s Finest

Walk in the lush Tel Dan Nature Reserve, one of the sources of the Jordan River, where you’ll discover biblical intrigue and one of the oldest arches in the world. Lunch at Dag al Hadan Restaurant on the Hatzbani River.
Tour of the Golan Heights to visit bunkers where the Syrian army used to “look down at Israel below”. Then look out over the border from the peak of Mt. Bental to gain a special perspective on Israel’s complex geopolitics. Barbeque dinner on an Israeli army base with young soldiers who are giving some of the best years of their lives to the defense of Israel.

Tuesday, 15 November

Cradles of Jewish Civilization in the Galilee

Explore ancient Tzippori and study Jewish text in the ruins of the city where Rabbi Judah Hanasi sealed the Mishna. Discover its magnificent mosaics, including Mona Lisa of the Galilee and ponder why an ancient synagogue floor features a wheel of the zodiac. Lunch on own. Tour the old synagogues and picturesque alleyways of the mystical city of Tzfat and discover the origins of our Friday night service where Lecha Dodi was written. Visit studio of a local glassblower and hear how Jewish spirituality influences her art.
Boat ride on the Sea of Galilee followed by a lakeside dinner at Decks Restaurant.

Wednesday, 16 November

Zionist Beginnings and Roman Ruins

Travel across northern Israel to the Mediterranean Coast. Visit Zichron Yaakov, an early Zionist first pionneering community. Meeting with Rabbi Elisha Wolfin, spiritual leader of Zichron Yaakov’s Masorti (Conservative) community.
Tour of the Carmel Winery, where Israel’s modern wine industry was born. Lunch and wine tasting at the boutique Tishbi Winery. Visit the ruins of Caesarea, including its Roman Theater, Amphitheater, Hippodrome and Promontory Palace. Ponder a rabbinic debate over Jews attending gladiator games. Check in to the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean Coast. Dinner on own.

Thursday, 17 November

The Hebrew City and the Jewish State

Travel to Rehovot for a guided tour of the Ayalon Institute – an underground bullet factory used by Jewish forces before the founding of the State of Israel. Hear about the establishment of Tel Aviv at the Founders Monument, then stroll down Rothschild Boulevard to view the Bauhaus architecture for which central Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At Independence Hall relive David Ben Gurion declaring the new State of Israel. Tour the alleys of Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as the Gate of Zion. Look out at Tel Aviv from the top of ancient Tel Jaffa. Remainder of afternoon free to explore on own and get in last minute shopping. Late check out. Farewell dinner at Goshen Restaurant. Transfer to Ben Gurion Airport – See you again soon!

Morning airport transfer for domestic flight to Eilat. Descend into a Red Sea coral reef at Eilat’s Underwater Observatory where you look out the window at the surrounding marine life. Continue exploring Eilat’s remarkable undersea world at the obesrvatory’s aquarium. Lunch on own. Check-in to Dan Eilat Hotel, Eilat – Shabbat dinner at hotel.

The Wonders of Petra

Early departure for Petra to explore the amazing red sandstone structures carved by the ancient Nabateans. Enter Jordan at the Arava Crossing and travel to Petra by bus (approx. 2.5 hours). Tour its Treasury (“Khaznieh”), Roman theatre, impressive caves and rock formations of this Nabatean City. Buffet lunch included. Return to Eilat. Dinner on own.
