Arrive in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative Tour the alleys of Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as the Gate of Zion. Shekhiyanu-Welcome ceremony overlooking modern Tel Aviv. Proceed to check-in at the Dan Panorama Hotel on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean Coast. Welcome dinner and orientation at hotel.

Sunday, 30 October

Foundations of the Modern State

Visit the Palmach Museum in Ramat Aviv for a multimedia presentation about the elite underground organization that played a critical role in founding the State of Israel. Tour the nearby Yitzhak Rabin Center for a critical look at Israeli society. Lunch on own. Travel to Rehovot for a guided tour of the historic Ayalon Institute, a clandestine bullet factory used by the Jewish underground before the founding of the State of Israel. Return to hotel. Dinner at Maganda Restaurant in Tel Aviv’s old Yemenite Quarter.

Monday, 31 October

Southern Exposure

Meeting the Peoples of the Negev. Travel to the northern Negev. Visit Kibbutz Alumim to meet with a local kibbutz member and hear first-hand about living on the Gaza border, pioneering in the Negev and the kibbutz as a community. Lunch in the kibbutz’s communal dining room. Visit the Israeli Air Force Museum at Hatzerim to see exhibition of historic Israeli Air Force planes and hear the story of this elite branch of the Israel Defense Forces. Tour of exotic orchard, followed by dinner at Ora’s Yard on Moshav Kfar Maimon. Taste their home-made liqueurs and jams. Hear your hosts’ moving immigration stories. Dinner: Ora’s Yard. Return to Tel Aviv.

Tuesday, 1 November

The Mediterranean Coast

Depart for northern Israel. Visit the ruins of Caesarea, including its Roman Theater, Amphitheater, Hippodrome and Promontory Palace. Ponder a rabbinic debate over Jews attending gladiator games.Guided tour of the former Atlit detention camp where the British held Holocaust refugees, who tried to enter the country “illegally”. Board an “illegal immigration ship” to watch a multimedia presentation about the heroic pre-State immigra- tion. Enjoy Druze hospitality in the village of Dalyat El Carmel on Mt. Carmel – Hear about the Druze from a member of the community. Lunch: Druze hospitality lunch at Nora’s Kitchen in Dalyat El Carmel. Drive to Haifa. Panoramic view over the greater Haifa region and tour of the ornate Bahai Gardens. Hotel check-in to Dan Panorama Hotel in Haifa. Dinner with Israeli soldiers.

Mystical Tzfat and the Strategic Golan Heights.

Tour the old synagogues and picturesque alleyways of the mys- tical city of Tzfat and discover where Lecha Dodi was written. Free time for shopping and to explore on your own. Visit the studio of a Kabbalistic artist. Lunch on own. Tour the Golan Heights for a special perspective on Israel’s complex geopolitics as we visit former Syrian bunkers overlooking Israel and strategic Mt. Bental. Tour and wine tasting at the boutique Bahat Winery on nearby Kibbutz Ein Zivan. Return to Haifa. Dinner at hotel.

From the Galilee to Jerusalem

Explore ancient Tzippori and study Jewish texts in the ruins of the city where Rabbi Judah Hanasi sealed the Mishna. Discover its magnificent mosaics, including Mona Lisa of the Galilee and ponder why an ancient synagogue has a wheel of the zodiac. Lunch on own. Travel south along the Trans Israel Highway. See Israel’s Security Barrier en route. Visit the Tobaje Community Center serving the Ethiopian Israeli community in Ramla. Hear first-hand the modern exodus story of Ethiopian Jewish immigration to Israel and learn about the challenges facing their commu- nity – Take part in a traditional Buna (coffee) ceremony. Ascend to

Jerusalem. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the Old City of Jerusalem from Mount Scopus. Check-in to the Dan Panorama Hotel in Jerusalem. Free evening. Dinner on own.

Friday, 4 November

Holocaust, Remembrance and Continuity

Guided tour of Yad Vashem Israel’s national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Historical Museum and Children’s Memorial. Tasting tour of the raucous Machane Yehuda Market and take in a slice of local life as you see Jerusalemites shopping for Shabbat. On the way, see the picturesque Nachalaot neighborhoods. Free time to relax and prepare for Shabbat. Welcome Shabbat at Kol Haneshama, a local Reform synagogue, followed by a home hospitality Shabbat dinner as a group in the home of a Jerusalem family accompanied by Sabbath bless- ings, stories, songs and a variety of Jewish dishes.

And on the Seventh Day…in Jerusalem

Optional: Shabbat morning services at a local synagogue. Late morning visit to the Tower of David Museum to explore its exhibits, medieval courtyard and enjoy a stunning panoramic view from its roof. Traditional Shabbat Lunch at hotel. Shabbat afternoon options:
Late afternoon walking tour to the historic Montefiore Windmill to dis- cover the first neighborhood built outside the walls of the Old City. AND/OR: Walking tour to First Temple period burial site at Ketef Hinnom – Where archaeologists discovered the oldest biblical text ever found. Havdalah ceremony together as a community. Free evening. Freedom Fighters or Fanatics?

Set out across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod’s palace and the last outpost of Jewish inde- pendence 2,000 years ago. Discussion: Which Jewish Legacy – Masada or Yavne? Swim in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, at a local resort hotel. The resort also has a fresh water pool and spa facilities. Massage and spa treatments available by prior reservation at own expense. Lunch at Dead Sea resort. Stop off at Abraham’s Tent for a brief camel ride before returning to Jerusalem. Dinner on own

Briefing on Israeli and Middle East Politics by guest lecturer.
Tour the Knesset to hear about Israel’s lively parliamentary democracy. Visit to Hadassah Hospital to see the Chagall Windows. Free time to explore on your own, relax, pack and get in last minute shopping.

Late checkout to allow time to pack and freshen up. Late afternoon visit the Israel Museum: Guided tour of the Shrine of the Book (Dead Sea Scrolls) and Second Temple Model. Farewell Dinner.
