Going up into the Land

Arrive in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative. Tour the alleys of Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as the Gate of Zion. Shekhiyanu-Welcome ceremony on top of Tel Jaffa overlooking modern Tel Aviv. Proceed to check-in at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean Coast. Welcome dinner and orientation at Goshen Restuarant.

Tuesday, 20 December

The Hebrew City and the Jewish State

Walking tour of historic “Little Tel Aviv” – Discover the quaint Neve Tzeddek neighbourhood that gave birth to the “first Hebrew city in 2,000 years”. Relive David Ben Gurion declaring the new State of Israel at Independence Hall. Hear about the birth of Tel Aviv standing at the Founders Monument on Rothschild Boulevard. Then stroll down the Boulevard to see the Bauhaus architecture for which central Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch on your own and free time to explore the Nahalat Binyamin crafts fair. Travel to Kibbutz Gezer: Kids will participate in an icecream making workshop with dessert gourmet David Leichman. Parents will meet Rabbi Miri Gold to hear about religious pluralism in Israel from a pioneering Reform woman rabbi. Return to Tel Aviv. Guided tasting tour for light dinner in Tel Aviv’s colorful Levinsky Market. Free evening.

Cradles of Jewish Civilization in the Galilee

Depart for northern Israel. Meaningful visit to Atlanta’s P2K Partnership region Yokneam/Meggido. Lunch with P2K. Travel to the mystical city of Tzfat. Tour the old synagogues and picturesque alleys of Tzfat – The cradle of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) in the 16th century. Discover the origins of our Friday night service where Lecha Dodi was written. Check-in to Kibbutz Hagoshrim Hotel in the Galilee Panhandle.

Ancient and Modern Geopolitics and Israel’s Finest

Walk in the lush Tel Dan Nature Reserve, one of the sources of the Jordan River, where you’ll discover biblical intrigue and one of the oldest arches in the world. Jeep tour to the Golan Heights to “look down” at Israel from abandonned bunkers the way the Syrian army once did. Lunch on own. Time and weather permitting: Look out from the peak of strategic Mt. Bental for a special perspective on Israel’s complex geopolitics. Taste some of the Golan’s finest on nearby Kibbutz Zivan: Kids: Chocolate making workshop at the De Karina Chocolate Factory. Adults: Guided tour of the boutique Bahat Winery including wine tasting. Dinner at Dag Al Hadan Restaurant on the Hatzbani River, one of the sources of the Jordan. Overnight: Kibbutz Hagoshrim.

Across Israel: A Multicultural Jewish Society

Discover Ethiopian Jewish culture at the Germachin Center in Beit Shean. Learn about Ethiopian Jewry’s modern day Exodus story and the challenges facing the Ethiopian Israeli community today. Continue south through the Jordan Valley and ascend to Jerusalem. Lunch on own. Explore the raucous Machane Yehuda Market and take in a slice of local life as you see Jerusalemites prepare for Shabbat. On the way, see the nearby picturesque Nachalaot neighborhoods. Check-in to Dan Panorama Hotel, Jerusalem. Free time to relax and prepare for Shabbat. Attend Friday night services at a Kol Haneshama, a Reform synagogue in Jerusalem’s Baka neighborhood. Experience a Festive Shabbat Dinner with Shabbat of a Lifetime, in the home of a Jerusalem Family for a delicious Shabbat dinner accompanied by a program of Sabbath blessings,stories and songs.

Bnei Mitzvah Ceremony and celebration. Havdallah and Light first Chanukah Candle with Rabbi Levenberg. Visit to the “Waffle Lady” – An iconic Jerusalem eating experience (at own expense)

The Old City of Jerusalem

An Ancient Jewish Legacy – Discover the archaeological story of the Western Wall and standing where Jewish pilgrims walked 2,000 years ago at the Davidson Center, Robinson’s Arch and the Southern Wall Excavations – Hear about a recent discovery connected to the Chanukah story. Explore underground Jerusalem walking next to massive ashlars in the Western Wall Tunnels.

Lunch on own in Jewish Quarter. Scavenger hunt in the Jewish Quarter, followed by free time to shop and explore on own. Check out how residents of the Jewish Quarter light Chanukah candles, then Light the second Chanukah Candle together as a community at your hotel. Free evening.

Underground Adventure

Drive to Beit Guvrin in the Judean Foothills to participate in a real hands on archaeological excavation in a cave next to biblical Tel Maresha. Lunch on own. Travel to Rehovot for a guided tour of the Ayalon Institute – a clandestine bullet factory used by the Jewish underground before the founding of the State of Israel. Return to Jerusalem. Tuesday, 27 December

Masada and the Dead Sea: Freedom Fighters or Fanatics?

Set out across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod’s palace and the last outpost of Jewish independence. Discussion: Which Jewish Legacy – Masada or Yavne?
Swim in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, at a local resort. The resort also has a fresh water pool and spa facilities. Massage and spa treatments available by prior reservation at own expense. Lunch at Dead Sea resort. Time permitting: Walk in Ein Gedi Nature Reserve opportunity to bath in waterfalls and hear how David hid there from King Saul. Holocaust, Remembrance and Continuity

Guided tour of Yad Vashem Israel’s national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Historical Museum and Children‛s Memorial. (Children under age 10 are not permitted in Yad Vashem’s historical museum).

Alternate program for younger children: Visit Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo, where you’ll see animals which lived in Israel during biblical times. (Children will be accompanied by youth counselor. Zoo admission not included in the tour price). Lunch on own. Discover the story of Zionism’s founding father Theodore Herzl at the multimedia Herzl Museum, followed by a meaningful visit to the adjacent Mt Herzl Cemetery, where you will find chapters in modern Jewish and Israeli history standing at the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Hannah Senesch and Theodore Herzl. Prepare food packages for distribution to some of Israel’s neediest people at Pantry Packers logistical center in southern Jerusalem. Briefing on Israeli and Middle East Politics by guest lecturer. Check-out from the hotel. Visit Yad Lakashish, a unique employment project helping Jerusalem’s elderly, including a stop in its shop “where shopping is a mitzvah!”
